Washing & Fit Guide for Karate Gi
New karate uniforms (usually 100% cotton) can feel slightly loose on first try-on. That’s expected: the fabric shrinks a little after the first washes and the fit settles. Use the quick fit checklist below, then follow the care routine and shrinkage guidance.
First try-on: quick fit checklist
- Jacket sleeves can be slightly longer at first (they’ll shorten after washing).
- Trouser length: try barefoot; legs may be a touch long before shrinkage.
- Run through a few basic moves (kihon): strikes, kicks, turns. No pulling or tight spots?
- Check waist & knot: firm yet comfortable?
What to expect: shrinkage & sizing
- Wash temperature: up to 30–40 °C to minimise shrinkage.
- Unbleached cotton: up to about 7% width and 10% length shrinkage.
- Sizing already accounts for this: after 2–3 washes most gis fit as intended.
Washing (routine)
- Before first use: wash without detergent.
- After each training: use regular detergent; avoid fabric softener and bleach.
- Turn the gi inside out to reduce wear.
Drying & ironing
- Air dry for best results.
- If you use a tumble dryer, expect an additional ~½ size of shrinkage.
- Iron on low/medium; avoid direct heat on prints/embroidery.
